Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy picked up strength and speed this morning and is now nearing landfall. Landfall should occur near extreme southern New Jersey or central Delaware by late afternoon or early evening.
Winds of 60 to 80+ mph Reported
Location | Top Wind Gust |
Tuckerton, N.J. | 88 mph |
Westerly, R.I. | 86 mph |
Groton, Conn. | 75 mph |
Milford, Mass. | 67 mph |
- Wind gusts of 60 to 80+ mph have been reported in several coastal locations from Massachusetts to coastal New Jersey and coastal Maryland. Wind gusts have topped 60 mph in Boston and New York City.
- The National Weather Service has issued a statement indicating that damaging wind gusts of 70 to 90 mph are possible in the New York City metro area, Long Island and southern Connecticut through 8 pm EDT Monday.
- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to close New York City bridges at 7:00 PM today due to high winds.
- Downed trees, powerlines and other wind-related damage has been reported in Mass., Conn., R.I., N.Y., N.J., Pa., Vt. and N.H.
- Widespread downed trees, powerlines and power outages will continue through Monday night and early Tuesday. Some structural damage is also possible in areas with winds gusting above 70 mph. With stronger winds just above the ground, some high-rise buildings may have windows blown out.
More than One Million Without Power
- As of 6 pm Monday, The Weather Channel and weather.com News Desk reports that there is a total of more than 1.6 million customers without power across 15 states.
- The states with the greatest number of power outages are New York and New Jersey. Both of these states have more than 400,000 without power.
Next Peak Storm Surge this Evening
Surge Forecast
- With the first high tide cycle this morning, significant coastal flooding inundated many locations in southern New Jersey.
- The highest storm surge is expected along Long Island Sound and New York Harbor with the next high tide this evening. Surge flooding will also reach its peak during high tide tonight along the Jersey Shore and the south coast of southern New England.
- In some of these areas, peak tide levels may top those from both Hurricane Irene by 2 feet! Tide levels in Sandy Hook, N.J. have topped the previous record from the Dec. 1992 Nor'easter and Hurricane Donna in 1960!
- Coastal flooding will continue through additional tide cycles beyond Monday's peak into Tuesday afternoon, in some areas!
Appalachian Blizzard
Heavy Snow Forecast
- Up to 10 inches of snow was reported as far south as Newfound Gap, Tenn. at an elevation of 5,000 feet. In Wise County, Va., up to 5 inches of snow was reported. A weather observer near Snowshoe, W.V. reported 4 inches.
- Parts of the Appalachians above 2000 feet could see over 1 foot of snow. Above 4000 feet, that total could top 2 feet! Put simply, this could be the October snowstorm of record in some locations of the Appalachians from eastern West Virginia to northern North Carolina.
- Coupled with the high winds we mentioned earlier, the threat of downed trees, power outages, and, due to the weight of the heavy, wet snow, roof collapses exists with this storm. Whiteout conditions are possible, at times. Travel will be difficult, if not impossible.

Green Lantern Kia Soul to Make SEMA Show Debut
Kia’s SEMA show stand will be full of superheroes this year. After showing off a teaser of The Flash-themed Forte, and unleashing the Batman Optima on New York, Kia is now teasing a Green Lantern-themed Soul that’ll make its public debut at the SEMA show next week.
Although Kia is mum on details on the Green Lantern-themed Soul, the front-quarter panel teaser gives us a glimpse of the Soul wearing the Green Lantern’s signature shades of black and green. The custom Soul will also get a custom front bumper with a carbon fiber diffuser. The Green Lantern Soul also gets blacked-out headlights with green projector bulbs, and deep dish wheels sporting the Green Lantern’s logo.
The Green Lantern Kia Soul is the latest collaboration between DC Entertainment and the Korean automaker. In addition to the Green Lantern Soul, The Flash Forte, and the Batman Optima, Kia will also be showing off Aquaman- and Cyborg-themed concepts at next week’s SEMA show.

One of the Top Ten Car Myths
Perhaps you've heard this advice from a well-meaning friend: Beware of buying a red car because the police will be lying in wait for you. They just love to give speeding tickets to people in red cars.
There are lots of theories as to why this might be so. Maybe red cars are more eye catching and the police are more likely to notice them on a crowded highway. Or maybe that bright red paint job has a psychological effect on drivers, inspiring them to push harder on the gas pedal. Or maybe the type of person who likes red cars is also the type of person who likes to speed. Well, you can forget all those explanations, because there's no evidence that drivers of red cars get speeding tickets any more often than the law of averages would suggest. Police have denied for years that they target red cars over other colors. The urban legend site Snopes.com debunks this myth by pointing to an informal survey in a 1990 issue of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, where a reporter counted the number of red cars (as well as all other colors, too) in the area and then looked through police records to see what color cars had been recently ticketed. The percentages were almost exactly the same. The same survey showed that gray cars are actually statistically more likely to get tickets and that white cars are less likely. So if you don't want speeding tickets, make your next car a white one. But you don't necessarily have to avoid red.

- The Korean Batmobile gets a custom front grille shaped like a bat wing.

NEW YORK — Kia has taken the wraps off of the Batman-themed 2013 Kia Optima SX Limited, the first of eight Justice League vehicles it is building with comic book publisher DC Entertainment and Rides magazine.
The Korean Batmobile gets a custom front grille shaped like a bat wing.
Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg will be matched to other Kias in the coming months.
Customization of the Kia Batmobile starts with the exterior of the turbo sedan being outfitted in a mix of matte and piano black paint, and continues with a coil-over kit, body kit, exhaust system and 20-inch blacked-out wheels with Batman center caps. Other details include yellow underbody lighting and a Bat signal etched into the HID headlights.
The interior gets black leather-and-suede upholstery with yellow accent stitching, a center console with "utility throwing stars" as well as a Bat suit for crime-fighting purposes in the trunk.
Kia, DC and Rides will release customization packages based on other Justice League members in the next few months. Some of the featured superheroes are Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, and Kia says the Soul, Sorento, Sportage, Rio and Forte will be some of the models outfitted for the next projects.
The partnership is raising awareness of DC Entertainment's "We Can Be Heroes" giving campaign that fights hunger in the Horn of Africa. Each car will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the cause.

Going Electric: Kia Soul EV Slated for U.S. in 2014, Could Debut Next Year
Though an electric Soul would be the first Kia EV in the U.S. market, it wouldn’t be the automaker’s first crack at an EV. The Korean market-exclusive Kia Ray EV, introduced last year, has a range of up to 86 miles on a single charge, and is powered by a 50kW electric motor that puts out 129 lb-ft. or torque. Its 16.4kWh lithium-ion battery can be fast-charged in just 25 minutes, and slow-charged in six hours. Although it’s unknown what would power the Soul EV, the Kia Ray could give us a hint at what we can expect.
The quirky box car is already a hot item in the U.S. So far this year, Kia’s second best-seller has sold 93,356 copies — more than the Sportage and Forte combined. Although the Soul doesn’t necessarily need help in the sales department, a low-volume EV could give Kia some green credibility. A Soul EV could also compete with other ultra-low volume EVs including the upcoming Fiat 500 BEV, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf, and Honda Fit EV.

Care and Maintenance Tips Keep Your Car Running in Top-Notch Condition
If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs.

New Picanto 'City' Goes On Sale 1 October
LONDON – Oct 2, 2012: Kia’s new three-door Picanto ‘City’ will be the latest model to grace the ‘Originals’ collection when it goes on sale in the UK on 1 October this year at the desirable price of £10,245.
This attractive new ‘Original’ is packed full of functional but fashionable features not normally associated with cars in this price range, offering assured practicality with just a hint of glamour.
‘Originals’ models stem from the idea of a fashion collection – being frequently updated with distinct styles and personalities.
The Picanto ‘City’ flaunts an exciting exterior look, with features including the signature red grille, 14” alloy wheels, chrome door handles, heated door mirrors and front fog lights. Metallic paint is a standard feature and the model is available in Blaze Red or Bright Silver, so you can arrive in the city with style. Its high specification includes reversing sensors, which make parking in those tight city centre spaces convenient and effortless.
The interior boasts premium cloth upholstery, ample storage for personal items and a leather trimmed steering wheel with audio controls. Features unique to the ‘City’ include ambient LED lighting and a “Hollywood” style vanity mirror with three-stage illumination sequence. Bluetooth connectivity allows the driver to make hands-free calls via voice recognition and stream music wirelessly.
Powered by the low-emitting three-cylinder Kappa 1.0 MPI engine, with a five-speed manual gearbox, the ‘City’ produces just 99g/km of CO2 and delivers 67.3 mpg on the combined cycle, making it exempt from road tax and the London congestion charge.
Comprehensive safety features include Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management and Hill Assist Control. Significantly, ‘City’ is fitted with Cornering Brake Control, which is a first in the Picanto range. With six airbags, the ‘City’ is extremely safe and is also equipped with five three-point seatbelts all round, making it one of the few 5-seaters in its class.
Naturally, ‘City’ is covered by Kia’s pioneering seven-year warranty and owners can cover the first three services of the car with Kia’s Care-3 service package for just £269.The Picanto ‘City’ is one of the first models to adopt Kia’s new re-designed bonnet badge, which will adorn new models progressively over the coming months.
